A model that served design well often struggles when documentation starts. Design modelling rewards speed and exploration. Documentation demands consistency, correct classification and reliable data. Bridging that gap deliberately, rather than discovering the problems sheet by sheet, saves considerable time.
Audit before you document
Before producing a single sheet, work through the model:
- Element classification. Is everything modelled as what it actually is? Walls modelled as generic masses, or floors drawn as slabs of the wrong category, will produce wrong schedules and wrong quantities.
- Levels and grids. Correct, named consistently, and used properly. Elements hosted to the wrong level cause problems that surface later and take a long time to trace.
- Wall and floor types. Real assemblies with correct layers, not placeholders. This is what makes sections work.
- Duplicate and stray geometry. Elements left from earlier options, hidden but present, will appear in schedules and quantities.
- Naming discipline. Room names, type names and family names consistent, because these propagate into every schedule.
Views and templates before sheets
Set up view templates before creating views. Applying consistent visibility, scale, detail level and annotation settings through templates means a change applies everywhere rather than being repeated on forty views. Practices that skip this end up hand adjusting each view, and the set drifts out of consistency.
Decide what is modelled and what is drafted
Not everything should be modelled. Fine detailing, flashings and small junctions are often more efficiently produced as drafted details on top of a model section. Deciding this per detail type early prevents both extremes: a model so detailed it becomes unmanageable, and a set so thin the model contributes nothing.
Write the decision down, because inconsistency here is what makes a set feel incoherent.
Annotation strategy
Agree how things are tagged and dimensioned before sheets begin. Which elements carry tags, whether dimensions run to grid or to face, how levels are annotated, where notes live. Retrofitting a convention across a completed set is slow and error prone.
Schedules reveal the truth
Run the key schedules early, even if incomplete. A door schedule will expose inconsistent type naming and missing data immediately, while there is still time to fix the cause rather than patch the output. Schedules are the fastest audit of modelling discipline available.
Plan the sheet set up front
A sheet list agreed at the start, with numbering and content defined, prevents the sprawl that happens when sheets are added as needed. It also makes it obvious what is missing, which is harder to see once there are eighty sheets in the browser.
