Millwork drawings sit between design intent and manufacture. Too loose and the fabricator makes decisions you should have made. Too prescriptive about the wrong things and you constrain a shop that knows its own methods better than you do. A good set is specific where it matters and silent where it does not.
The pieces of a complete set
Location plans. Where each item sits, keyed with a consistent reference system. Every piece of millwork should have an identifier used consistently across every drawing.
Elevations. Each item drawn face on, dimensioned, with material and finish call outs, door and drawer arrangement, and hardware indicated.
Sections. Enough to show construction and interfaces: carcass depth, counter overhangs, toe kick, how the item meets the wall, floor and ceiling.
Details at a working scale. Edge profiles, reveals, joints, junctions between materials, and anything with a specific visual outcome you care about.
Schedules. Materials, finishes, hardware and appliances, with references rather than descriptions where possible.
The information that gets missed
- Services. Power, data and plumbing within or behind the item, and access to them. This is the most common omission and the most expensive on site.
- Tolerances and scribes. Real walls are not straight. Show where scribe allowance sits, or the fabricator will decide for you.
- Grain direction and matching where it affects appearance.
- Reveal dimensions. If a shadow gap matters, dimension it rather than drawing it approximately.
- Support and fixing for anything heavy or cantilevered, including blocking required in the wall behind.
- Access for maintenance to anything that will need it.
Where to leave room
Specify outcomes rather than methods where the shop knows better. Say the joint is flush and the reveal is consistent, rather than dictating the joinery technique. Fabricators have preferred methods and equipment, and prescribing against them adds cost without improving the result. Be immovable on what will be seen and how it performs, flexible on how it is achieved.
Coordination that prevents rework
Millwork drawings need to agree with the architectural set on wall positions, floor levels and ceiling heights, and with the services drawings on outlet positions. Where the item is built against unfinished construction, be clear whether dimensions are to finished or structural faces. That single ambiguity causes more remakes than any other.
The test of a set is simple: could a shop price it accurately and build it without calling you? If not, the gaps are where your risk sits.
